Colder inland, and the pipes know it
Corry sits inland and at elevation, and it runs measurably colder than the lakeshore. That matters for one specific reason: hard freezes here are harder and last longer, so frozen and split supply lines are the single most common call we take from the city and the surrounding townships.
The housing amplifies it. Corry grew as an industrial town and much of the stock dates from that era — frame houses on block or stone foundations, long uninsulated supply runs through unheated basements and crawl spaces, and plumbing that has been extended, rerouted and patched over a century. A cold snap after a mild spell takes out several houses in the same week, and because a lot of them are older homes with unfinished basements, owners often underestimate the damage until humidity has moved through the whole house.
The second pattern is aging municipal and lateral infrastructure surcharging in heavy rain, which is Category 3 sewage work rather than a drying job. The third is the vacant or partially occupied property — Corry has a share of buildings that are not lived in year-round, and those are where leaks run longest before discovery.
Corry is our furthest regular Erie County response at about 75 minutes, and we cover it 24 hours a day like everywhere else.
Shut the water main off if it's a supply leak. Kill power at the breaker to the affected area if water is near outlets — never wade into standing water to reach the panel. Lift what you can. Photograph everything before it's touched.

How fast can you actually reach Corry?
About 75 minutes. It is the furthest of our regular Erie County response areas and we will give you a straight ETA rather than quoting you the 45-minute city number.
Why do pipes freeze here more than in Erie?
Elevation and distance from the lake. The lake moderates temperature along the shore; Corry does not get that benefit, so freezes run colder and longer. Uninsulated runs that survive a winter in Millcreek will not necessarily survive one here.
What should I insulate before winter?
Anything running through an unheated basement, crawl space, garage, or exterior wall — and know where your main shut-off is before you need it in the dark. We will point out the vulnerable runs during any assessment at no charge.
It is an unfinished basement. Is it worth calling?
Usually yes. Water in an unfinished basement still saturates framing, insulation and the underside of the floor above, and it drives humidity through the whole house. The assessment is free, so finding out costs nothing.
